DirectQuery for Power BI Datasets and Azure Analysis Services (preview)
Have you heard of Composite Model in Power BI (that existed from Nov 2018), which allow you to seamlessly add multiple DirectQuery sources and Imported data to your models? However, you could not use Power BI Dataset (in Power BI Service) in the Composite Model, because it is a Live Connection (not a DirectQuery), until now...
With DirectQuery for Power BI Datasets, you can now connect to Power BI Dataset (either shared by your organization's BI team, or your own), and combine it with other Imported or DirectQuery data. For example, if the central reporting team shared a Power BI Dataset with you, you can connect to that Dataset, then blend it with additional Excel data (or other data source) that contains your organization's own data, to further customize the data model to meet your reporting needs.
Here is what Marco Russo and Alberto Ferrari said about this new feature (or Composite Model 2.0 / Gen 2):
Marco Russo - "The business intelligence world dreamed of its holy grail for 20 year"
Alberto Ferrari - "an historical milestone in the development of Business Intelligence. Historical. Milestone."
"this is neither nice nor cool: this is huge: finally, can seal the marriage between self-service and corporate BI"
Why this feature is a big deal? (summarized by RADACAD - Reza Rad):
- Leverage the central model
- Bring more datasets
- Self-service and enterprise model combined
- Less redundancy
- More consistency
- Re-use instead of re-do
- More trust in Power BI results
It is definitely worth your while watching the ~13 min video from Adam (Guy in the Cube) and Tessa (Program Manager) to help with your understanding of this new capability:
